Cult/Star player for MoDo Hockey

Kallas "Bäckis".

Målvakt från Tegs SK i Umeå som till och från kunde spika igen kassen fullkomligt. Värvades av "Kabben" Berglund från Teg till Alfredshems IF (I dag Modo) redan 1959 då han fortfarande var 19 år.

Gjorde sin sista match i Modotröjan 1975 då han fick hoppa in som reserv efter att man fått Peter Holmqvist skadad.

Gunnar Bäckman spelade två VM-turneringar. Båda tillsammans med Leif "Honken" Holmqvist. Åren var 1969 och 1970 då dessutom båda turneringarna gick på Johanneshovs Isstadion i Stockholm. Båda turneringarna slutade med silver för Tre Kronor och vid turneringen 1970 fick han göra ett mycket uppmärksammat inhopp mot Tjeckoslovakien då "Honken" blivit skadad och förbunskaptenen Arne Strömberg ville mörka det ända fram till nedsläpp. Matchen gick utmärkt och Sverige vann med 5-4 efter storspel av Bäckman.

Landslagsdebuten skedde 27/11 - 1966 i Helsingfors då Sverige spelade mot Finland och då han fick rycka in som reserv till "Honken" då Kjell Svensson blivit skadad.

Bor i Örnsköldsvik.
